This process was primarily done at the termination or connectorising stage. However, we wanted to create another Fibre Prep stage, freeing up more time for the Terminators, enabling improvements in yield and reducing fatigue.
When selecting automation, consideration is given to frequency, quantity, variety, ease of use, changes/settings, location, cost/payback and of course, the human effect and welfare.
Our decision was to introduce two pieces of equipment; the Unistrip 2545, for removing the outer jacket sheath and the FO7010 for trimming the Kevlar® yarn to length. Both are small enough to sit side by side and can be run by one technician or with enough volume, one per machine.
We’ve found, since introducing the two sets each, that they are more versatile than originally planned. Initially, they were justified for patch lead manufacture but now we use them on drop cables, MTP cable and ruggedised pre-terms.
